What can we do with the filtered plastic?
Utilization and energy generation
The collected plastic can no longer be recycled, as its molecular structure is damaged by salt water. One innovative alternative is gasification, which produces a synthetic gas consisting mainly of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The hydrogen can be used as an energy source for fuel cells, thereby providing an ecological and environmental-friendly means of powering the facility.
CO2-neutrality und algae bioplastic
The carbon dioxide generated by gasification can be supplied as a staple nutrient to algae cultures, so that it is not released into the atmosphere. The algae can be cultivated on the water surface of the Pacific Garbage Screening platform. Its biomass can then be used to produce an environmentally compatible and biodegradable bioplastic.
